President Mahama Backs Creation of National Defence University to Strengthen Ghana’s Security Sector

In a significant move aimed at advancing Ghana’s national security and defense education, President John Dramani Mahama has pledged his full support for the establishment of a National Defence University by the Ghana Armed Forces.

The President made this commitment during an engagement with the military, expressing confidence in the Ghana Armed Forces' capacity to lead such a transformative initiative. According to him, the creation of a National Defence University aligns with Ghana’s long-term vision to modernize the military and provide top-tier training and strategic education for defense personnel.

Enhancing Local Military Capacity

President Mahama emphasized that the proposed university will serve as a center of excellence for military and strategic studies in West Africa. It will not only equip Ghana’s security forces with advanced academic and tactical training but also attract military scholars and defense experts from across the continent.

“The establishment of a National Defence University is not just a military milestone—it’s a national development imperative,” President Mahama stated. “It will produce the caliber of leadership we need to address today’s evolving security challenges.”

Government’s Commitment

He reaffirmed the government’s readiness to provide the necessary support, including policy backing, funding facilitation, and infrastructure development. The initiative, he said, would be fully integrated into Ghana’s educational and security architecture to ensure sustainability.

The President also acknowledged the Armed Forces’ discipline, professionalism, and commitment to national development, noting that the university would be a fitting testament to their invaluable service.

Looking Ahead

If realized, the National Defence University would be the first of its kind in Ghana, positioning the country as a regional hub for advanced military education. It is expected to offer postgraduate degrees in areas such as defense strategy, cyber security, peacekeeping, and conflict resolution.

As Ghana faces new and complex security dynamics both regionally and globally, President Mahama’s endorsement signals a forward-looking approach to defense preparedness—one that fuses intellectual rigor with operational excellence.
