Arson Attack on Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence: Suspect Arrested and Charged
A shocking arson attack on the official residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has sent shockwaves through the state. The incident occurred in the early hours of April 13, 2025, when a fire was deliberately set at the governor's mansion in Harrisburg. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as Governor Shapiro and his family, along with any guests, were evacuated safely from the building.
The attack, which occurred at around 2:00 a.m., was swiftly followed by the arrest of 38-year-old Cody Allen Balmer from Penbrook, Pennsylvania. Balmer has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder, terrorism, arson, and aggravated assault. In his confession, Balmer expressed deep animosity toward Governor Shapiro and admitted that he intended to harm the governor, potentially using a hammer if he had encountered him during the attack.
According to authorities, Balmer made his way onto the property and used gasoline-filled bottles, commonly known as Molotov cocktails, to start the fire. The blaze caused considerable damage to the mansion's south wing, particularly affecting a large public room. The Harrisburg Fire Department quickly contained the fire, extinguishing it within approximately 20 minutes.
During a press conference, Governor Shapiro condemned the act of violence, calling it a direct assault on the people of Pennsylvania. He emphasized that such an attack would not deter him from his duties and vowed to continue his work for the state. The timing of the attack, coinciding with the start of Passover, a time of religious significance for the Shapiro family, added a deeply personal layer to the incident.
The investigation, which is still ongoing, is being supported by the FBI, and authorities are working to uncover the full motives behind the attack. Governor Shapiro expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from residents of Pennsylvania and across the nation. As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are working to determine if the suspect had any larger plans or connections to broader threats.
